Will The Real Marketing Department Please Stand Up?

It would appear that Michael Stonebraker may have hung up his research hat

Well, it would appear that Michael Stonebraker may have hung up his research hat and joined the marketing team.

First, read this, “Will the Real Column Stores Please Stand Up?

And now read my reply, which Vertica has yet to approve on their blog.

Mike,
You’re describing an implementation, not an algorithm.  An analogy would be saying that anything that didn’t look like Hadoop wasn’t map/reduce.
Column stores exist because disk is slow – not because they’re some new and magical way to store data.  As a researcher, you’re well aware of the fact that it is impossible to prove that any solution is optimal given any problem set.  All one can do is optimize (potentially) the application of a particular implementation to a problem set and hope for the broadest application.
Vertica’s product has been optimized to a particular problem.  Other vendors have chosen potentially different ways of solving similar problems.  And those vendors classify those solutions under the broad category of ‘column-store.’  In the end, their approach may be no more valid than yours.
I like the Vertica product and while you’re analysis above does have some points, to independently claim Vertica as ‘The Real Enchilada’ without a comprehensive analysis of the market makes me think there was something timely about this editorial…

There’s no question in my mind that we’ll see Vertica snapped up this year and their blog post looks like the beginning of the “we’re different” game.  But for a company that has over 200 customers, they’ve already shown they’re different – take a look at the leadership page.  Over 200 customers and no VP of Sales, no VP of Professional Services, no VP of  Support/Training, No VP of Marketing.  But the most telling is the lack of a CFO.  This is a Highland Capital Partners portfolio company, and they like to have their hands on the cash.  If there’s any left that is.

Thanks for reading.
